Our usual method for using these is to knot outside the hinge (away from the halves of the clam), pass the cord through the hole in the hinge, then tie a knot that will be covered by the two halves (or for monofilament thread, use a crimp squeezed onto the filament or a seed bead tied onto the filament).

Place a dot of glue such as the Hypocement on the knot, then close the clams over the knot.

Wait until the glue dries before trimming excess monofilament.
